Dear beautiful man and beloved friend ... our love surrounds you. You are never alone, as God, Great Spirit, Holy Blessed Mother, gods, goddesses and Angelic Beings enfold you in the blessed embrace and hold you in the healing light. Tonight I begin a prayer vigil for your recovery.

Here on Staten Island, the EPA has been able to acquire and preserve some of the wetlands surrounding the island. Just a few weeks ago, however, there were people writing into the local paper kicking up some dust about this preservation. The want the land for their OWN use, their own selfishness. My boss, who calls people like me Eco Idiots, doesn't understand or even care to understand the value of it all. There's another piece of land that would be perfect for the greedy jerk who wants another building on an island that's overcrowed as it is that is also protected. It is protected because there are precious plants that are critical to cancer research. Here's a little piece as to just how vital the wetlands are to the community and the world and how man's interference with nature is nothing less than doom:

Wetlands serve as a natural filter to harmful chemicals in our waters. They provide storm protection and erosion control, as well as food and habitat to numerous fish and other wildlife. About 80% of the harbor's tidal wetlands and underwater lands have been lost to filling, dredging, and other human activities. The acquisition of this property is a key incremental step in the preservation of the remaining ecologically important sites. The action is consistent with the goal set in 2003 by the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary Program, a multi-stakeholder program authorized by the Clean Water Act, that aims to acquire or preserve 2,700 acres of habitat by 2009.

I attended a Sisters of Earth conference in Minnesota two years ago and renowned environmental activist and indigenous leader Winona LaDuke served as guest speaker. She spoke about destruction of the native lands in MN, but within the context of how tribes are forming in solidarity to bring about Earth healing. I was moved and inspired by her words and the actions she is taking as a strong EcoFeminist leader to unite her people in positive ways that are bringing about permanent social change. The youth of the Indian tribes have taken on strong roles, including forming video production teams that spotlight their concerns. Earth healing is beautiful yin energy. Winona's White Earth Land Recovery Project inspires me to no end. I am always happy to learn of other Earth Healing efforts that inspire and give hope for a better tomorrow.

ECO KUDOS

With both acknowledged and possible calamities as compelling and urgent
catalysts, Raincoast Conservation is advocating for British Columbia's first fully protected salmon runs. The move is an effort to save the grizzly bear species.

This bold and ambitious proposal runs contrary to the historical underpinnings of salmon management, as fisheries managers have always assumed that salmon exist exclusively for human consumption.

According to Raincoast, it is a matter of competition, and the odds are stacked against carnivores in these coastal salmon forests.
