Our Position There is no such thing as a "minor water" in Canada when it comes to our rights to navigate. If the NWPA excludes “minor waters” then the best paddling, boating, fishing and recreational rivers in this country will be abandoned to industrial development. There is no such thing as a "minor work" if it interferes with navigation on a waterway in Canada. Dams, bridges, causeways and booms are the very things that, by design, interfere with navigability. The current definition of navigable waters under the NWPA “….any body of water which is capable, in its natural state, of being navigated by floating vessels of any description for the purpose of transportation, recreation or commerce...” protects the fundamental public right Canadians have to navigate this country’s rivers. Any weakening of this definition to exclude recreational paddlers is unacceptable and is a direct assault on this country’s heritage. This is a very serious breach of public trust. This is an environmental issue. Because of its ability to trigger environmental assessments the NWPA is one of the pillars of environmental protection for rivers in Canada. The protection granted to waterways under federal fisheries legislation is toothless.isfr_sign.pdf

The object is to remove anything that would get in the way of Indusrial development of the waterway. Boats that draw less than 1 mete of water and are 1,5 meters wide would be banned from navigatable waterways. The glitch is that the Minster wants sole descrection to determine what watewrways re navigatable. As it stands now anything in canada that you can basically float a canoe on is a naigatable waterway and protected by the NWPA. He would decide what rivers abnd waterways are navigatable with the FFinance comittee behind closed doors with no public consultation and no right of of appeal. They would no longer require consultations with first nations people about the use of waterways on their lands ( in Vilolation of Supreme court rulings thatv exsit all ready. In a nut shell a mMinster inOttawa would control every water way in canada and we would have no say at all in what ever happened to it, Should he deem your favourite paddle a Navigatable watereway your boat would have to mmt the size requirements which eliminat canoes kayaks skiffs and runaboats personall water craft and smll sailing boats etc, Just in the way off making money of the waterway. The motoe baots of course are banned as well unless they are really big.

One thing I'm not clear about is why the government wants to block canoeing and kayaking on the rivers. Are the petroleum-belching, gas-guzzling motor boats also being banned? Is this an arbitrary ban, or is navigation being closed to everyone? I'd like to have time to dig into this to the core level, but alas, time eludes me and that luxury is not an option. I'm looking for the short-cut .... the who, what, when, where, why and how in 25 words or less. lol! What's the latest?

ECO KUDOS

The Indianapolis Prize is the largest individual monetary award for animal species conservation in the world and is given as an unrestricted gift to the chosen honoree by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.

The award is not designed to be a quiet, academic, scientist-focused event, but instead an energetic and spectacular celebration of conservation victories. The goal is to inspire the general public to start caring about conservation, and to place heroes, who live in tents in danger of both wild beasts and poachers, on the pedestal that we usually reserve for sports and entertainment stars.

The recent East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress held in Manila, Philippines, concluded with the signing of the Agreement Recognizing the Legal Personality of Partnerships in the Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia. This Agreement creates a fully-fledged international body to work for sustainable development of the region’s coastal and marine areas.

With both acknowledged and possible calamities as compelling and urgent
catalysts, Raincoast Conservation is advocating for British Columbia's first fully protected salmon runs. The move is an effort to save the grizzly bear species.

This bold and ambitious proposal runs contrary to the historical underpinnings of salmon management, as fisheries managers have always assumed that salmon exist exclusively for human consumption.

According to Raincoast, it is a matter of competition, and the odds are stacked against carnivores in these coastal salmon forests.

TAKE ACTION!

Become part of the Backyard Revolution and landscape for wildlife.

Replace your lawn with native shrubs, flowers and trees. Plant a butterfly garden, and put in a pond. You'll benefit from the beauty and tranquility of your yard, and wildlife will benefit from the food and water sources that you provide.

Need some guidance? Read the book Bringing Nature Home.

Half of all animal species will be extinct in our lifetime, unless emissions peak by 2020. Cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing your energy consumption, learning more about climate change and getting active in community efforts to heal the Earth. Become part of the solution.
