Slimming Down for the Planet: No Diet Required

Every January, people around the world resolve themselves to do, be, eat or love better than they did the the year before. I think it's safe to say all four of those aspirations often involve a mental picture of a somewhat thinner self as well. How convenient that two, very different, yet similarly passionate groups of people have come up with clever ways that this quest for ultimate fitness can fit perfectly with the equally noble pursuit of lives that are simple, responsible and lower… Continue

The Hallmark holiday to end all Hallmark holidays is fast descending upon us- the dreaded St. Valentines Day.

Outfitted with the most horrifying pinks, reds and lace, once a year this day climbs from the bowels of commercialism to haunt us with chemically processed sweets, synthetically stuffed animals, mass produced floral arrangements and a forests’ worth of greeting cards. Not to mention the emotional anguish it can inspire- Will you… Continue

Hi Beth -
I have tried to send you a shout on DIGG to thank you for the work you are doing to spread the word about Ursa Freedom Project. You are so supportive of this effort and I wanted to thank you publicly so people can see how much I value you. I will try again another time, but for now I want you to know how much I appreciate you! Thank you for your continued support and modeling for how to use the internet to take something viral. Many blessings to you, Beth!

Hahaha! A new convert to 4-legged furry frenzied obsession. Welcome aboard! I've been gaga over eco goodies for dogs for nearly 30 years. I always love going to your site to read your blog posts and never know what to expect. I tried leaving you a message at EcoSphere but it wouldn't let me post my message without verifying a word, but the word never appeared on my browser to verify. So I was caught in the endless cyber loop with no way to leave a message on your blog. So I'm leaving it here instead. Good work you're doing!

Hi Beth -
I just can't seem to get the hang of Twitter. Something that is supposed to be so easy just totally confounds me. So, for example, would someone search for ecopaparazzi and then click follow to follow us? Once they did that would I have their username so I click follow back, and he we would be following each other? Meanwhile, I want to thank you for sending me this note, so I can remove the Twitter announcement. Anybody on Twitter must have had a good laugh at me today, since it shows I'm clueless about twitter. LOL! But I'm still not quite grasping it. Would you do me a favor and follow me so I can see how you come up on the twitter address? That will help. And then I'll take your advice and just start collecting followers. It feels a little voyeuristic, since I don't know the people, but if that's the way it's done, I"m game. Thanks for the education.

ECO KUDOS

Kudos to artist and writer Rod MacIver for producing a gorgeous edition of one of the most inspirational books I've ever read and animated films I've ever seen -- The Man Who Planted Trees. Rod's journal includes the story by Jean Giono and interviews with the film animator Frederic Back. Buy it at Heron Dance.

Global greed is out. Local sharing is in. The Wall Street system failed us; this book is a great guide as we build the alternatives. Kudos to David Korten, one of our most brilliant economic thinkers.

Thanks to Denis Slieker and Jos van Assendelft for writing Our Balancing Act: the real value of ecosystems. The book emphasizes the need to put a monetary value on the services provided by forests in order to provide a business case against unsustainable conversion. Buy the book at www.theforestenterprise.com

The Indianapolis Prize is the largest individual monetary award for animal species conservation in the world and is given as an unrestricted gift to the chosen honoree by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation. The award is an energetic and spectacular celebration of conservation victories and puts heroes, who live in danger of both wild beasts and poachers, on the pedestal that we usually reserve for sports and entertainment stars.
