Bear Bile Tourism

There is a dirty little secret in Vietnam, and it's called Korean Bear Tourism.

ENV, a wildlife watchdog group in Vietnam, has documented busloads of Korean tourists visiting bear farms where they witness a bear bile extraction, taste bear bile wine, and buy products made from bear body parts. T… Continue

Miracle Bear Needs Our Help

Dear Friends,
We have a miracle among us, and she is in danger. Two years ago, in a small region called Whacheun-gun in Kangwon-do province, South Korea, a young female bear escaped from a brutal bear farm and has miraculously survived the Korean wilderness for two years on her own.… Continue

Tiny Bear Cubs Rescued

I love a happy wildlife rescue story! Not all rescues end happily ever after, and even this rescue story that I'm about to post has a tragic note, because the mama bear was killed to poach the baby cubs. The poachers took the twins to an illegal bile farm in Vietman. But the Environmental Police raided the bile farm and rescued the itty bitty cubs. They are now in the custody and care of loving people at Animals Asia. I thought everybody here would like to read this story of rescue.… Continue

Profile Information

What do you love most about Ma Earth?
Her beauty and the wild creatures she houses.
What environmental issue concerns you most?
wildlife habitat destruction
Who is your Eco Hero/Heroine?
Rachel Carson
What actions are you taking to help heal the Earth?
Making conservation videos to raise awareness; creating social networks to inspire more people to get involved and take direct action; discovering how to raise money online and through fundraising activism to buy land to set aside for biological corridors; and working with teens on youth media that is focused on environmental and social justice. In my private life I'm vegan, don't drive a car, live simply and lightly, don't use a clothes dryer or household electrical appliances and try to lead by example to inspire and motivate others to go green.
What's the best eco quote you've ever heard?
"One Planet. One Experiment." Dr. E.O. Wilson
What is your favorite green website?
http://www.grist.org/
What gives you the greatest hope for the future of the planet?
Religious leaders and scientists opening their minds and hearts to work together to find solutions to global environmental concerns.
What else would you like to tell us about yourself?
My life changed in a flash three years ago by one man’s PowerPoint. I sat in a university lecture hall in Louisville, Kentucky, riveted to renowned biologist Dr. E.O. Wilson. He spoke about biodiversity hotspots, something I had never heard of. And yet there I sat, a former board director with the Kentucky Association of Environmental Education and 20-year veteran of community environmental activism. I was stunned and embarrassed. If I didn’t know about hotspots, who else didn’t?

That was a turning point. For the next year and a half I delved into research about hotspots. The more I learned, the more I changed my personal lifestyle choices. I began to think in earnest about what I could do to help protect these ecosystems. Then I took steps toward action.

I came to Costa Rica to work with Proyecto Campanario in southern Mesoamerica, the world’s third largest hotspot. I am using my media skills to help Campanario buy land in the Osa Peninsula to protect as biological corridors. Osa is a key conservation target within Mesoamerica, but real estate agents and developers have begun their assault on this fragile region. I am here helping to preserve vital habitat for the wildlife.
What is your funniest eco moment?
Looking out across a vast Indiana field, awed by the incredible number of buffalo grazing, and having my reverie broken by a 12-year-old niece guffawing that they were cows. I started wearing my glasses again not long after that.

ECO KUDOS

The Indianapolis Prize is the largest individual monetary award for animal species conservation in the world and is given as an unrestricted gift to the chosen honoree by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.

The award is not designed to be a quiet, academic, scientist-focused event, but instead an energetic and spectacular celebration of conservation victories. The goal is to inspire the general public to start caring about conservation, and to place heroes, who live in tents in danger of both wild beasts and poachers, on the pedestal that we usually reserve for sports and entertainment stars.

The recent East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress held in Manila, Philippines, concluded with the signing of the Agreement Recognizing the Legal Personality of Partnerships in the Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia. This Agreement creates a fully-fledged international body to work for sustainable development of the region’s coastal and marine areas.

With both acknowledged and possible calamities as compelling and urgent
catalysts, Raincoast Conservation is advocating for British Columbia's first fully protected salmon runs. The move is an effort to save the grizzly bear species.

This bold and ambitious proposal runs contrary to the historical underpinnings of salmon management, as fisheries managers have always assumed that salmon exist exclusively for human consumption.

According to Raincoast, it is a matter of competition, and the odds are stacked against carnivores in these coastal salmon forests.

TAKE ACTION!

Become part of the Backyard Revolution and landscape for wildlife.

Replace your lawn with native shrubs, flowers and trees. Plant a butterfly garden, and put in a pond. You'll benefit from the beauty and tranquility of your yard, and wildlife will benefit from the food and water sources that you provide.

Need some guidance? Read the book Bringing Nature Home.

Half of all animal species will be extinct in our lifetime, unless emissions peak by 2020. Cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing your energy consumption, learning more about climate change and getting active in community efforts to heal the Earth. Become part of the solution.

Feed the hungry.
Save indigenous people.
Stand up for workers' rights.

Be kind to animals.
Stop factory farms.
Save 100 animals every year.

End deforestation for grazing.
Save an acre of trees.
End grazing on public lands.

Tell USDA 'Wildlife Services'
to stop killing wildlife for
corporate ranchers' profits.

Stop wars for resources.
Help end corporate rule.
Live your conscience.

Save our oceans.
Stop the #1 polluter of water.
Support a sustainable planet.

Think outside yourself.
Live compassionately.
Stop the violence.
