Mountain top removal strip mining for coal has destroyed over 500,000 acres of mountains--a swath one quarter mile wide from New York to California. The mine waste has been dumped in over 1000 miles of streams--longer than the Ohio River.

www.bfi.org, That is where solutions are starting to come together. A good way to engage others who care about how to WORK together for solutions that will "pull the carpet" from the coal industry.

John Todd won the first prize and his project is in appalacia- he may be a good allie as he is working directly with these coal people. They face huge fines for their destruction (Tragically after the fact) so there be some leverage there as well- Perhaps inventing a better plan in the stripping process that has the 100 year picture in mind, like mountan art cities??

John Todd, living Systems.

I fear that if we do not get a much better energy solution in place all will be lost, since now clean coal and nuk power are considered green. I have a plan for a home energy unit that can work, a hydrogen incinerator genrator. THe momen we have her built and working I will let you know. In the mean time, we have to be creative and invent that which will displace what we don't want.

I feel your pain. They are TOTTALLY INSANE- Craziness!

Cheers

You see it when you type in one of these comment boxes. It was there when you typed the note to me. To post a blog you have to open one of these comment boxes. And when the box is open and you type, there is a camera icon in the tab bar in the comment box. This graphic shows you what I am talking about.

Hi Julian -
Just so you know, you can add a photo to your blog to make it more interesting. A shocking photo of MTR would enhance your blog. See the little camera looking icon here in this box I'm typing in? It's second from right. You click on that to add a photo. If you add the photo at the top of your blog, before you begin writing, the photo appears first and then the text. If people see a photo they will be more likely to read the blog. But it's good that you have two comments already on your blog. This photo you posted earlier in the album gets my attention.

I hope you like it here and will share your insights and tips for articles. If you have something you want me to include just let me know.

GROUPS PETITION OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING TO TAKE OVER REGULATION OF MINING IN WEST VIRGINIA
By John McFerrin

The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, the Sierra Club, Coal River Mountain Watch, and the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition have petitioned the federal Office of Surface Mining to evaluate the West Virginia State surface mining program, withdraw approval of that program, and substitute federal enforcement. If successful, the petition w… Continue

My latest Op-ed submission to the Charleston Gazatte/

It hasn't been printed yet but am hoping it will be.

One of our family stories is that a Mr. Skinner came up Coal River from St. Albans buying mineral rights at rock bottom prices. He made his “generous” offer to my ancestor who told him, “You are Skinner by name and you are Skinner by trade, but you will not skin old Isaac Barker.” Consequently my uncle owns forty acres with the mineral rights intact on Big Coal River in Boone County.

ECO KUDOS

The Indianapolis Prize is the largest individual monetary award for animal species conservation in the world and is given as an unrestricted gift to the chosen honoree by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.

The award is not designed to be a quiet, academic, scientist-focused event, but instead an energetic and spectacular celebration of conservation victories. The goal is to inspire the general public to start caring about conservation, and to place heroes, who live in tents in danger of both wild beasts and poachers, on the pedestal that we usually reserve for sports and entertainment stars.

The recent East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress held in Manila, Philippines, concluded with the signing of the Agreement Recognizing the Legal Personality of Partnerships in the Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia. This Agreement creates a fully-fledged international body to work for sustainable development of the region’s coastal and marine areas.

With both acknowledged and possible calamities as compelling and urgent
catalysts, Raincoast Conservation is advocating for British Columbia's first fully protected salmon runs. The move is an effort to save the grizzly bear species.

This bold and ambitious proposal runs contrary to the historical underpinnings of salmon management, as fisheries managers have always assumed that salmon exist exclusively for human consumption.

According to Raincoast, it is a matter of competition, and the odds are stacked against carnivores in these coastal salmon forests.

TAKE ACTION!

Become part of the Backyard Revolution and landscape for wildlife.

Replace your lawn with native shrubs, flowers and trees. Plant a butterfly garden, and put in a pond. You'll benefit from the beauty and tranquility of your yard, and wildlife will benefit from the food and water sources that you provide.

Need some guidance? Read the book Bringing Nature Home.

Half of all animal species will be extinct in our lifetime, unless emissions peak by 2020. Cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing your energy consumption, learning more about climate change and getting active in community efforts to heal the Earth. Become part of the solution.

Feed the hungry.
Save indigenous people.
Stand up for workers' rights.

Be kind to animals.
Stop factory farms.
Save 100 animals every year.

End deforestation for grazing.
Save an acre of trees.
End grazing on public lands.

Tell USDA 'Wildlife Services'
to stop killing wildlife for
corporate ranchers' profits.

Stop wars for resources.
Help end corporate rule.
Live your conscience.

Save our oceans.
Stop the #1 polluter of water.
Support a sustainable planet.

Think outside yourself.
Live compassionately.
Stop the violence.
