Five great enemies to peace inhabit with us: avarice, ambition, envy, anger, and pride. If those enemies were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace. ~Francesco Petrarch

Animals give me more pleasure through the viewfinder of a camera than they ever did in the crosshairs of a gunsight. And after I've finished "shooting," my unharmed victims are still around for others to enjoy. I have developed a deep respect for animals. I consider them fellow living creatures with certain rights that should not be violated any more than those of humans. ~Jimmy Stewart

MOVIE: Location: Kalahari: "The Meerkats" narrated by Paul Newman

I recently watched this wonderful movie. Here is all that Amazon has to say about it:

“Kolo is a young meerkat with a big sense of adventure. Deep in the hostile desert of the Kalahari, he and his family have created a home, but growing up is his greatest challenge of all. With danger lurking in every corne… Continue

I used to live in Alameda, and these horrendous oil spills are never good news. My heart just bleeds and bleeds for our wild cousinsThe photo you took of the gull carrying the plastic bag of garbage in its beak is especially disturbing, because that bird thinks it is carrying food. Ashley has posted a blog about plastics in the waterways and how the plastics are killing the birds. Between the oil spills and plastics polluting Earth's waters, I wonder what chance wildlife has against our actions. Thanks so much for posting the photos to help us all gain a perspective about the oil spill in the Bay area.

It will be fabulous to see your photos when that time comes. I went vegetarian about 33 years ago after becoming aware of the plight of farm animals, and then a year ago took the extra step to become vegan. You are so right about making different lifestyle choices through awareness, which is why we need to keep on educating others and raising the bar for awareness. It's nice to know you are out there making a difference for Mother Earth!

ECO KUDOS

With both acknowledged and possible calamities as compelling and urgent
catalysts, Raincoast Conservation is advocating for British Columbia's first fully protected salmon runs. The move is an effort to save the grizzly bear species.

This bold and ambitious proposal runs contrary to the historical underpinnings of salmon management, as fisheries managers have always assumed that salmon exist exclusively for human consumption.

According to Raincoast, it is a matter of competition, and the odds are stacked against carnivores in these coastal salmon forests.

I've seen this. It's quite disturbing. It reminds me so much of Bear Baiting. I feel the same way about fur-trappers. They catch the animal using a horrible leg-hold trap or snare... and then when they see that they've caught it, they club it over...
