Hi Curtis, thanks for the link to another solar greenhouse-r. I just visited Edward Burtynsky online (photographer and maker of the film, "Manufactured Landscapes"). Under his collection of images called "Urban Mines" I came across an Earthship raw material bonanza! I got an inspiration to modify the greenhouse we'll be building to incorporate those earthen tires and to partially submerge the lower part of the dome as a way to stabilize fluctuations when we get our periodic exterior sub-zero temperatures.
Anyway, thought you'd like to check out the Burtynsky site, http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/his images are both horrifying and stunningly beautiful. What an environmental testimony to our unsustainable culture. If you haven't seen the film, it really is a beautiful validation of the healing work that will be upon us for the rest of our lives.

Hey Curtis, I just tripped onto your vids and wanted to say I really enjoyed the Earthships, thanks for posting them, they're beautiful.
I wander through here when I get the chance and it's nice to come across a fellow plant/Earth person... that is, I'm a permacultured aspiring myco-medicinalist, storyteller/writer who happens to be developing my hands-on healing skills and otherwise just love being out gliding across the snow. I call home Truckee, CA which is a town at 6,000 feet just North of Lake Tahoe and we love our CSA farms- all 4 of them. Not bad for a dinky little community like ours. My neighbors and I are also plotting to build a solar dome greenhouse this Spring.

If you'd like to learn more about them, I'll get a little something together. Thanks also for posting that link to "The Secret Life of Plants," funny, I had just written down recently that I should try to find that old film and there you had it right ready for me to stumble onto.
Have a great weekend! :)-c

Hey, thanks for clarifying. I thought that was the deal but wasn't sure, so I'm grateful for your note. I hope to get the additions posted today to the sister site. Sounds like you and the wide open sea are best friends!

Hey, Hi there! It's so great to see you here. Not only am I loving looking at your wonderful dog (sleepy guy-- talk about feeling the peace of nature; dogs always serve as our best teachers), but I'm enjoying reading your comments on the profile page here. "The Earth will win." Yeah, I just blogged about that on my personal website. I took a photo of a moss-covered bench someone had built in the jungle about 12 years ago and today it's all green and mossy and slimy, and the wood is crumbling and decaying. Return ... return ... return. I'm looking forward to getting to know you. I"m always happy to be in the company of Eco Champions. So Welcome!

ECO KUDOS

TreeHugger founder Graham Hill recently asked himself why he still ate meat. Eco kudos to Hill for asking this vital question. His answers might surprise you.

Eco kudos to Clownfish, a marketing company, for including environmental technology, eco-design, corporate responsibility and social media into their services for helping companies become more green.

Hooray for the UN for declaring 2010 International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. Be inspired and get involved! It is the actions of individuals that will ultimately make a difference for safeguarding biodiversity.

The Indianapolis Prize is the largest individual monetary award for animal species conservation in the world and is given as an unrestricted gift to the chosen honoree by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.

The award is not designed to be a quiet, academic, scientist-focused event, but instead an energetic and spectacular celebration of conservation victories. The goal is to inspire the general public to start caring about conservation, and to place heroes, who live in tents in danger of both wild beasts and poachers, on the pedestal that we usually reserve for sports and entertainment stars.

TAKE ACTION!

A Call to Green Blog Readers: TAKE BACK the Comment Boards!

Opponents of environmentalism and loudmouthed climate deniers have controlled them long enough.

By Brian Merchant, Planet Green
This message is going to be short, sweet, simple--and long overdue. It's time to take back the comment boards on green blogs and websites. They've been domineered by obstructionist opponents of science and climate action long enough. So what can we do? Comment back. Read more.

Learn why biodiversity is important. Ask a kid. Even a 3-year old understands the importance of bees for pollination.

Put Earth first in 2010. De-clutter your mind and reprogram it for green. Explore avenues for green activism. Beware of the Green Scare and loss of civil liberties. There are tips on how to do this at Planet Green.

Become part of the Backyard Revolution and landscape for wildlife.

Replace your lawn with native shrubs, flowers and trees. Plant a butterfly garden, and put in a pond. You'll benefit from the beauty and tranquility of your yard, and wildlife will benefit from the food and water sources that you provide.

Need some guidance? Read the book Bringing Nature Home.

Half of all animal species will be extinct in our lifetime, unless emissions peak by 2020. Cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing your energy consumption, learning more about climate change and getting active in community efforts to heal the Earth. Become part of the solution.
