Good new about your friend and his website and work to help wildlife. If he can help us to promote sun bear conservation works and fund raise, that would be really great. I think there is a need to have more Europeans involve in wildlife conservation in Southeast Asia. This is the time to help. Together we could make a different! Thanks again Brigitta! Happy New Year to all! ~Wong

Hi Wong, I really envy your work and passion for animals, I hail from the same hometown as you, looking forward to working back in the forestry field, where I graduated from UMS, any openings? Have been years since I worked in other fields not related to forestry, but the dream of joining the forestry field is still there.. Thanks..

Hope so Sheryl. You are most welcome to come to SE Asia to see the bears yourself if not at a zoo that has both sun bears or moon bears.

Help Save the Sun Bears!

SUN BEARS: cute, tiny and threatened with extinction

Sun bears are the least know bears and a forgotten bears species. I have dedicated my life to studying them and helping to protect them from poaching and habitat degradation. There is so much work to do and only about five people in the world who have studied to learn about the sun bears.

Sun bears live on the island of Borneo, which is divided into three regions: Indonesia’s region, called Kalimantan; Malaysia’s region, called East Malaysia or Malaysian Borneo; and the independent nation of Brunei. I work in the Sabah region of Malaysian Borneo, in the east. Sun bears face many dangers, mostly from poachers and deforestation. As awareness increases about sun bears and the threats that are pushing them toward extinction, people are taking action to get involved in conserving them. This past November a coalition of concerned citizens and artists raised $400,000 to build the first phase of a sun bear conservation center. We will raise money for phase two in 2009. It's all very exciting and I fee like for the first time since I've been working with sun bears they may have a chance. Once people learn about sun bears they really start to love them and want to help.

To raise additional awareness about conserving bears from around the world, a film crew came to Borneo to film rare sun bears in the wild. The sun bear is just one of the eight species the documentary explores. I went with the film crew into bear country, otherwise they wouldn’t have known where to find the mysterious sun bears in Borneo. The film, Beartrek, is gripping and will captivate you if you watch it because you will discover the threats facing bears in the wild, and meet the dedicated people who are racing to save them from extinction. And more good news. Actress Joanna Bessey will host a travel documentary on Malaysia produced by BBC that will be aired on the worldwide network sometime in January. The documentary will include information about the need to conserve sun bears. I am happy the sun bears are finally getting some notice. Public attention is the one thing that may save them from extinction, because people who care will make some noise. Watch the movie trailer for Beartrek

Thank you for your help. We need you!

Hello Wong,

I became a member of UFP a couple months ago and I feel the need to tell you...

Your work is absolutely inspiring to me. I am now, sitting where you were a couple of years ago as a university student determined to give their life to conservation and the animals of the Earth. My interest are somewhat similar and yet very different, but you are slowly becoming one of my idols. The saying, "Lions, Tigers, and Bears! Oh my!" was, in my opinion, made for me. I hope to work with large carnivores like large cats and bears for the rest of my life. The work you've done has convinced me that it's possible. As well, I'm very sorry for the tragedies you must face everyday with the poor Sun Bears. It's so upsetting to see the things people do to animals without even a second thought. Everyday, my heart drops a little more with the approach of full-onslaught tiger farming, the pre-existing torture of bears, and the persecution of all our charismatic megafauna. You're a beautiful person and thank you sooooo soooo much for what you do each day. You are an inspiration to all of us students scratching at the graduation gate, desperately waiting to get out there in field with you and make a difference...

With love and admiration,
Ashley

Hi Wong -
I've got the video of the Borneo forests burning on the main page, to help make people aware of this issue and how it affects wildlife. I plug you and send folks to your blog. Keep me posted on your conservation concerns so we can keep generating awareness about the habitat issues in Borneo, which so desperately affect the sun bears. Be sure and blog about the construction of the bear houses here, and anything else relevant to the conservation work you are doing.

Kudos to artist and writer Rod MacIver for producing a gorgeous edition of one of the most inspirational books I've ever read and animated films I've ever seen -- The Man Who Planted Trees. Thanks to Denis Slieker and Jos van Assendelft for writing Our Balancing Act: the real value of ecosystems. The book emphasizes the need to put a monetary value on the services provided by forests in order to provide a business case against unsustainable conversion. The Indianapolis Prize is the largest individual monetary award for animal species conservation in the world and is given as an unrestricted gift to the chosen honoree by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation. The award is an energetic and spectacular celebration of conservation victories and puts heroes, who live in danger of both wild beasts and poachers, on the pedestal that we usually reserve for sports and entertainment stars.
